NIPIGON — A snow squall warning is in effect Monday for several areas across Northwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada issued the warning Monday morning, extending the entire length of the north shore, from Pigeon River to Marathon and extending west of Thunder Bay towards Upsala.

Continuing east to Sault Ste. Marie there is a blizzard warning in effect.

The snow squall was forecasted to stay in the region for an hour or two as a sharp cold front moves from north to south.

It is expected to bring short-term, intense snowfall that will likely cause brief whiteout conditions and 70 km/h wind gusts.

This heavy and blowing snow may significantly and suddenly reduce visibility to near zero at points.

A weather advisory is also in effect in the Greenstone area due to reduced visibility from a combination of snow and blowing snow.

Environment Canada warns locals to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

It also urges residents to stay up-to-date on issued monitor alerts and forecasts.

The story will be updated as information becomes available.
