After a short illness, our very loved äiti mummu, Martta Kallio, passed away peacefully in the hospital on Friday, December 8, 2023 with family by her side.
Äiti was born in Kauhajoki, Finland on July 23, 1923 and came to Canada in 1960 with her husband and 2 daughters. She was a hard worker, a talented sewer, knitter, baker, cook and was always ready to help her family and sent toys and treats to all their fur babies too. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren adored mummu and she loved their visits. She was so happy to have the whole family together for her 100th birthday this past summer.
She was predeceased by her husband Mauri and her brothers Olavi and Veikko in Finland.
Martta is survived by her daughters Liisa (Brian) and Soili (Wayne) grandchildren Erin, Brianne, Brian Scott, Kirsi, Marissa, Stefanie and Emily. Great grandchildren Bryson, Brendan, Nate, Lucas and Rylan as well as numerous relatives in Finland and, of course, her precious kitty Sammi.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff on the second floor of TBRHSC for their compassionate care of our äiti mummu. Thank you also to Krystyna from Saint Elizabeth for her care and concern.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Hilldale Lutheran Church would be appreciated or a charity of your choice.
We were so blessed to have our Äiti mummu in our lives for so long. She has left us with wonderful memories that we will all treasure forever.
