With great sadness the family of Georgette Evelyn (Marie) Larrett announce her passing on Saturday, July 15, 2023 in St. Joseph’s Hospice.

“George” was born on May 24, 1949 in Campbellton, New Brunswick, to Bella and Angus Maillet. When she was a young girl they moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario where the family grew to include a total of nine children. George attended Maple Street School and A.N. Myer’s Public School. She loved to tell stories of her growing up years and the fun (trouble) that she and her siblings would get up to including stealing fruit from the trees along the route to and from school.

George met her future husband Verne in Niagara Falls in 1971 and they moved “up North” to Thunder Bay where, after several moves, they built their home in Murillo in 1978. George and Verne made a great team tending a huge and plentiful garden and George cooked many delicious meals for the family. Of course no Sunday dinner was complete without a double layer chocolate cake. George had many specialty dishes, with her pasta and potato salads being near the top of this long list.

George worked at Hill’s Greenhouse, the Tree Nursery, and then as a dietary aide at McKellar Hospital and TBRHSC until her retirement. She really enjoyed her time “in the kitchen” and often told stories of the fun and laughs she and her coworkers shared together there. George was a lover of music, especially the “King” himself, Elvis Presley. Even in hospital she loved to listen to her tunes as family took turns playing DJ to George’s requests.

George was an animal lover and cherished many pets and grand-pets over the years. She will be missed by her dog Peanut and her cat Baby. George cherished many friends over the years, too many of them to name here. Above all George loved her family and was so proud of her two boys and her grandchildren. They were truly her pride and joy.

George is survived by her sons Jason (Michelle), and Chris (Mandi); her grandchildren Jacob, Hailey, Becca, Kendra, Connor, as well as Meghan and Abigail. She is also survived by her sisters Suzanne and Carolyn; many nieces and nephews; as well as numerous in-laws, other relatives, and friends who were like family.

She was predeceased by her husband Verne; parents Bella and Angus; and siblings Richard, Frank, Paulette, Peter, Carmel and Renee.

We would like to extend our thanks to the entire Renal department at TBRHSC and want you all to know how much George appreciated your kindness and senses of humour. We would also like to thank the incredible staff on 2C and at the Hospice Unit at St. Joe’s. Thank you all for your compassion and care during a very difficult time.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Georgette Larrett will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 am in EVEREST WAVERLEY CHAPEL 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Interment for family will follow at Stanley Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Georgette to St. Joseph’s Hospice or the Renal Department at Thunder Bay Regional would be appreciated.

“I believe for every drop of rain that falls,
A flower grows.
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night,
A candle glows.”
