Mr. Geordi Kakepetum, 71, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre surrounded by loved ones. Geordi was born on Monday, April 14, 1952 in Sandy Lake, ON.
Geordi had a very successful career as a determined and ambitious leader. He began his leadership endeavours as the Chief of Keewaywin First Nation before he became the founder of Keewaytinook Okimakanak Tribal Council. Geordi believed all First Nation people are entitled to all the basic necessities such as education, healthcare, appropriate living conditions such as housing, food security and clean drinking water. This was the driving force behind his vision for a better tomorrow for the people of the far north. Over the span of 30 years, Geordi’s steady dedication and passion transformed Keewaytinook Okimakanak from a humble beginning, in a small office with only a few staff members, into a multi-faceted corporation with over 220 staff and numerous regional offices. In 2012, Geordi received the Emile Nakogee Leadership Award presented by Nishnawbe Aski Nation recognizing his accomplishments.
Geordi is survived by his children: Barbara and Aaron; grandchildren: Courtney M., Aiden, Zoey, Victoria, Andrew, Courtney W., Shelley and Daniel Jr.; great-grandchildren: Nia and Jordan who he loved more than anything. He also leaves behind his siblings: Hallum, Kanina, Wanda, Brenda, Sol and Darlene, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who he loved as well. He will also be missed by Lynda, Robin, Natasha, Anthony, Adam and Erin. Geordi will be remembered by many extended family members, friends near and far, and many colleagues throughout his career – especially Max, Frank & Diane and the Bechard Family.
He was predeceased by his parents Annie and Adam Kakekapetum, brothers James and Alan, daughter Bernice.
Funeral Services will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at New Hope Church, 532 Edward St N. Thunder Bay, ON, presided by Lott Thunder. Visitation will begin at one hour prior. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
