It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dorothy “Dot” Mary Chapais Legarde (nee Abraham), age 88 years, a proud member of Ginoogaming First Nation, who passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Geraldton District Hospital on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

Dorothy was born on June 25, 1936 in Longlac to James and Frances (nee Fisher) Abraham. She dedicated her life to taking care of her children and their home. Dot enjoyed the outdoors, camping and being in the bush. She loved watching sports, especially baseball and hockey, and was always the loudest one in the crowd, cheering on the teams. She was also an incredible cook, and many treats and meals were shared with family and friends. Dot's greatest passion was working with children, teaching them traditional values and crafts such as sewing. She was an encouragement for the kids of the community, always helping them whenever they needed advice or support. Dorothy's big heart, love and kindness will be missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her children, Dominic (Liz), James, Cletus, Veronica, Arthur Jr. and Fran as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she was very proud of. She will also be missed by her siblings, Jocelyn, Veronica (Ervin), Mary (Claudie) and Connie (Kenny); and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Dot was predeceased by her first husband, Arthur Chapais and second husband, Gilbert Legarde; her parents James and Frances Abraham as well as her siblings, Pauline, Barney, Fredna, Diane, Sydney, Edgar and 4 in infancy.

Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. Family and friends are invited to gather at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Longlac for a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Hugo Tremblay. Interment will follow at Longlac Cemetery.

A wake will be held in the Long Lake #58 Community Centre on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, beginning at 2:00pm for immediate family. The wake will be open to friends at 4:00pm and will continue until Wednesday morning.

Dorothy will be dearly missed but her memory will live on in the hearts of family, friends, and community members.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST - WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
