THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada says up to 15 centimetres of snow could fall on the city between Friday night and Saturday.

The government weather service as a result has issued a weather advisory for Thunder Bay, cautioning that due to mixed precipitation, snowfalls totals could drop below 10 centimetres in the city.

There is also a risk of freezing rain.

The weather advisory says the snow and.or rain could last until Saturday afternoon, noting the snow will progress eastward overnight, reaching areas south of Lake Nipigon by early Saturday morning.

Snow may mix with or transition into ice pellets over an areas stretching from Upsala to Thunder Bay's west into the city itself.

Freezing rain could occur on Saturday morning, the highest potential for which will be west of Upsala and south of Highway 17 toward the border with the United States, where a freezing rain warning is already in place.
