THUNDER BAY – Above seasonal temperature to bring a mix of rain and snow for Northwestern Ontario.

From Kenora to Nipigon, the region is expected to see temperatures above zero over the weekend heading into the new year compared to usual seasonal temperatures of around -5C to -8C, said Barbara Lapido, operational meteorologist for Environment Canada.

The Kenora area should expect mainly rain on both Saturday and Sunday, with a bit of snow possible Sunday morning.

“Temperatures are going to be on the positive side,” said Lapido.

In the Thunder Bay area, residents can expect a mix of rain and snow for Saturday with mainly rain as temperatures hover close to 0C.

“For Sunday morning, they have a little bit more chance of having some snow, especially the early morning of Sunday,” said Lapido.

“Moving to areas close to Nipigon, there the chance of snow is a little bit bigger,” she added.

The Nipigon area may see up to five centimetres snow. However, with mild temperature, there is a good chance it will quickly melt, said Lapido.
