THUNDER BAY — Two new forest fires were discovered in Northwestern Ontario on Sunday.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports that Thunder Bay 6 is located about one kilometre north of Gull Bay First Nation.

Fire ranger crews responded to the three-hectare blaze assisted by a helicopter equipped with a belly tank.

The fire was listed Sunday evening as being held.

The other fire in the region, Nipigon 4, is located near Calvert Lake, about 56 kilometres west northwest of Geraldton.

It was listed as not under control after burning about one hectare.

These were the only active fires in Northwestern Ontario as of Sunday evening.

The MNRF has not yet disclosed how either fire is believed to have started.
