SCHREIBER — It’s the perfect weather to spend some time in the water.

The township of Schreiber has announced its splash pad is finally set to reopen after a temporary closure due to a water restriction put in place earlier this month.

At a previous council meeting this month, Schreiber’s chief administrative officer, Rhonda Smith, addressed the decision to close the splash pad.

“There was a concern about the level of the water in the raised tank so OCWA (Ontario Clean Water Agency) had requested that we go to water conservation and that we shut the splash pad off until they got the level to where they wanted it. They had a magic number in mind and that’s what they were shooting for,” she said.

Mayor Kevin Mullins described the situation in further detail at the same meeting.

“What had happened is when we ran into the boil water (advisory) on June 10 it was because of the pass pump. We had issues with the pass pump and when they were trying to go back online, this butterfly valve acted up and it locked in a closed position.

"Since the boil water advisory, (we’d) been operating on filter one, three, four, and five – (we’d) been operating on four filters out of five . . . with the splash pad operating, it was going down a little more,” Mullins said.

“My first line of duty here is to make sure the citizens of Schreiber have clean, potable, drinkable water. My second duty is to make sure there’s adequate fire protection – and, doing what OCWA has done, we are assuring that for our residents.”

In a post on its Facebook page, the township wrote the splash pad will be open seven days a week - from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day.

“Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding while our crews worked hard to resolve the issues,” the township wrote.
