OTTAWA—The Canadian government and Canada Health know about the concern and stress that parents and guardians are feeling as a result of the shortage of baby formula. Algoma Public Health shared information for families during this time, particularly regarding the shortage of formula for infants with food allergies.

While there is no shortage of regular infant formula in Canada, there is a shortage of specialized infant formulas for babies with allergies and medical conditions.

APH shared helpful information and hints for parents and guardians who can’t find specialized infant formula. Above all they suggest that speaking to a doctor, registered dietitian or nurse who can help direct parents and guardians to possible formula substitutes.

Here are some helpful hints offered by AHU:

  • Speak to a healthcare professional, they can recommend possible formula substitutes and how to transition them to your baby’s diet.
  • If you cannot access your regular health care provider for timely advice, contact the Telehealth service in your province or territory.
  • If you can, breastfeed your baby.
  • Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider for advice on whether your child can try a different formula. Continue with a trial of any new formula for at least seven to 14 days unless severe symptoms occur.
  • Do not use infant formula from unknown sources, such as online third parties.

Algoma Health Unit acknowledges that this can be a distressing situation for parents, guardians and caregivers. Following some of these helpful hints can help minimize this stress, and help direct you to the proper advice from health care professionals.
