SCHREIBER – Northwestern Ontario boxing legend Domenic (Hollywood) Filane will be inducted into the Boxing Canada Hall of Fame next month.
The 55-year-old represented Canada at two Olympic Games in the light flyweight division, in 1992 in Barcelona and four years later in Atlanta.
Filane was a two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, landing on the podium in 1990 and 1994, and represented his country at the Pan American Games in 1995 and 1999.
“I am very humbled and honoured to receive the news that I will be inducted into the Canadian Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame on Nov. 23 in Sarnia at the national amateur boxing championships,” Filane writes in a post to his Instagram page.
“For an aspiring young small-town boy, this is it, a dream come true. To have my name etched on the wall with the greats, such as Lennox Lewis, Willie deWitt, Shawn O’Sullivan, Mike Strange, Dale Walters, Egerton Marcus, Dale Brown, Chris Johnson, Sonny Wong, Ray Downey, Tory Ross and Scotty (The Bulldog) Olson is surreal.”
Filane credits his parents and coaches for the support and resources he needed to follow his dream.
“I had the privilege to travel the world with some of the greatest teams, met so many people and made so many great friends along the way. I will forever cherish the great memories that we had made together in that magical time, and look forward to seeing many of those friends in Sarnia,” Filane said.
Filane was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Ontario Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017.
