OTTAWA – According to a report in the Globe and Mail, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could resign from his post as Liberal Party leader as early as Monday.
While sources couldn’t pinpoint the exact date the embattled Trudeau will step down, it is expected to happen before the party’s national caucus meeting on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, it’s unclear if Trudeau will abandon the leadership immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau is facing the distinct possibility his government will be brought down by a vote of no confidence, which NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has said he will call for and support at the next possible chance.
The House of Commons isn’t expected to sit again until Jan. 27, though there have been reports Trudeau may prorogue Parliament in order to allow the Liberals to choose a new leader to lead them into the next election.
