Process underway to rename Longlac road

Choosing a new name for Indian Road is part of Greenstone’s reconciliation efforts, mayor says.

LONGLAC — A committee in Greenstone is working to rename a road in Longlac with an existing name that is “not appropriate,” according to the municipality’s mayor.

Jamie McPherson told Newswatch that the committee was struck about a year ago and is in the process of consulting area First Nations about the renaming of Indian Road.

“We have, adjacent to the municipality of Greenstone, six Indigenous communities, and we have two Métis communities, so we need to speak with all the communities to ensure that there's been input,” McPherson said. “In our strategic plan we're looking at reconciliation, and part of the reconciliation was to review all the road names within the municipality of Greenstone.”

The road branches off of Forestry Road, and has a couple of schools, some homes, and a church along its stretch. Its name “needs to be changed,” McPherson said, adding that its existing moniker dates back to the 1950s.

“The goal is to have a name for the road that certainly reflects (a) change in direction,” he said.

Renaming the thoroughfare is one of the priorities for Greenstone city council identified in the municipality’s current strategic plan. There’s no set timeline for the process to be completed, McPherson said, adding that “it will be completed when all those who wish to provide input have had that opportunity.”

“The process will drive the end result, and we will be grateful for that.”
