SCHREIBER, ON — A resident of British Columbia has been charged with stunt driving after a weekend incident on the Trans-Canada Highway near Schreiber.

OPP allege that a 22-year-old woman from the Vancouver area was caught on radar on Saturday travelling at 182 km/h in a 90 km/h zone

"Driving at speeds like this is dangerous to all who use our highways," said a police post on social media.

This is the highest speed at which a stunt driver has been tracked in Northwestern Ontario so far this year.

Penalties for stunt driving in Ontario include:

  • immediate 30-day licence suspension
  • 14-day impoundment of vehicle
  • six demerit points
  • potential fine between $2,000 and $10,000
  • one-year licence suspension upon conviction
  • possible jail time up to six months
  • mandatory driver education course

If a fine is issued for stunt driving, the provincial government adds a 20% surcharge.

The number of motorists charged by OPP with stunt driving in the Northwest has risen sharply this year.

To date, 106 charges have been laid, almost double the 55 charges laid at this point in 2022.
