Police said the incident highlights the danger posed by reckless driving on winter roads

NIPIGON — Ontario Provincial Police are calling a recent incident on the north shore of Lake Superior a "completely unacceptable" example of driver behaviour.

On Friday, police received a complaint that a tractor-trailer had passed a snowplow on Highway 17, narrowly avoiding a serious collision with an oncoming school bus and a plow truck it was in the process of overtaking.

The incident happened at about 7:45 a.m. on an "s" bend near Rainbow Falls Provincial Park, just east of Rossport.

Video posted to social media showed a collision was only prevented by the quick response of the driver of the plow truck, who swerved as far to the right as possible without hitting guardrails, thereby allowing the transport to squeeze between the plow truck and the oncoming school bus.

"The incident highlighted the potential dangers posed by reckless driving on winter roads," OPP said in a statement to Newswatch on Monday.

Officers from the Nipigon detachment conducted extensive patrols in an effort to locate the tractor-trailer, but were unable to do so.

There was no immediate word on whether the bus was transporting any children at the time the incident occurred.
