OPP investigate a close call on Highway 11/17

A pickup truck left the road and was driven along the bottom of an embankment before re-entering the highway

THUNDER BAY — A narrow escape from a potentially serious collision on Highway 11/17 is under investigation by Ontario Provincial Police.

The incident reportedly happened Monday near Dorion, and was captured on video by another motorist.

Footage posted to the Facebook page of the Highway 11/17 Kills People group showed a double-cab pickup truck following a tractor-trailer.

On a straight stretch of road, with dotted lines indicating it would be safe to pass if there was no oncoming traffic, the pickup can be seen gradually entering the opposite lane before proceeding right off the highway and down the embankment.

The video shows the brake lights were applied briefly but the vehicle then continued to be driven along the ditch before the driver was somehow able to navigate back up to the highway.

"Slow down, don't get too close...this is scary...there's an accident coming up, I swear," said an individual in the vehicle where the video was recorded.

It's unknown what caused the operator of the pickup to lose control.

An OPP spokesperson said Tuesday that police are aware of the incident and that they are conducting an ongoing investigation.
