As part of Ontario’s plan to stay open, the province is investing $1 million to modernize and expand North of Superior Healthcare Group’s McCausland Hospital site.

TERRACE BAY - The investment supports early planning for the hospital’s redevelopment, enhancing emergency services and upgrading aging infrastructure to improve access to care for patients and their families in Terrace Bay and the surrounding communities in the region.

“Expanding and redeveloping North of Superior Healthcare’s McCausland Hospital is a key part of our government’s plan to build a stronger, more resilient health care system and stay open,” said Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This investment will ensure the hospital can better address the needs of local families and provide much-needed services in the community for many years to come.”

The North of Superior Healthcare Group is a three-site facility that includes Wilson Memorial General Hospital, McCausland Hospital and Wilkes Terrace Long-Term Care Home.

McCausland Hospital was built more than 40 years ago. The hospital provides 24/7 emergency services, outpatient clinics, care for medical inpatients and complex continuing care, in addition to diagnostic imaging, laboratory, pharmacy, physiotherapy and community support services for a growing population of approximately 4,000 residents in the communities of Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Rossport, Jackfish and Pays Plat.

As part of the redevelopment, the hospital plans to renovate the emergency department to improve emergency care quality, efficiency, and privacy. The redevelopment will also better support health care partners by providing high-quality care to the communities it serves through integrating health services and programs.

“Every person in Ontario is entitled to modern, efficient, high-quality health care,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. “That’s why our government is investing $1 million to help expand and modernize North of Superior Healthcare Group’s McCausland Hospital site. Once renovations and the expansion are complete, patients from Terrace Bay to Pays Plat will have access to an enhanced, integrated health care service, as well as better hospital emergency and outpatient services.”

Ontario is working with North of Superior Healthcare Group on the early stages of the planning process, including identifying programming, operational and space requirements and assessing how the project can further help address the health care needs of patients and families in the region.

“The North of Superior Healthcare Group is very appreciative of the Ontario government’s support, which will allow us to ensure the sustainability of high-quality health care services in the Terrace Bay catchment area for decades to come,” said Eileen McGrath-Ervin, chair of the board of directors North of Superior Healthcare Group. “We are committed to supporting the healthcare needs of our patients, residents and their families through this exciting redevelopment project as we pursue our vision of Healthy Communities.”

To support the growing demands on the health care system, Ontario’s investments over the next 10 years will lead to $40 billion in health infrastructure across the province. These investments will increase capacity in hospitals, build new health care facilities, and renew existing hospitals and community health centres.
