TORONTO — Ontario motor vehicle owners will no longer be required to pay annual licence plate renewal fees.

Premier Doug Ford confirmed Tuesday morning that renewal fees and licence plate stickers are being eliminated, effective March 13, 2022.

The government is tabling legislation that will also provide refunds for any licence plate renewal fees paid since March 2020.

Ford said the measure will help Ontarians cope with the rising cost of living.

It will save most drivers $120 a year.  In Northern Ontario, where fees are lower, the savings will be $60 a year per vehicle.

The province will also lose over $1 billion annually in revenue, but the premier said that money will be going back into the economy.

Physical licence plate stickers were previously eliminated in other provinces including Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
