THUNDER BAY -- A 67-year-old male from Thunder Bay has died following a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 11/17 Wednesday afternoon.

Two others were sent to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation. Both patients sustained injuries but they were non-life threatening in nature.

Members of the Thunder Bay, Shabaqua, Armstrong and Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police detachments along with Shuniah Fire & Emergency Medical Services responded to a collision with two transport trucks and two passenger vehicles around 1:19 p.m. Wednesday.

"We do know at this time that two transport trucks were involved initially, which then caused the two passenger vehicles to also collide within that first initial impact between the two transports," acting sergeant Joel Eppinghaus of the Thunder Bay OPP said.

The highway was closed until early Thursday morning.

The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team and OPP collision reconstructionists, along with the Forensic Identification Services, are assisting in the investigation as it remains ongoing.
