NIPIGON — Provincial police in Nipigon have issued a warning about counterfeit money.
Police are cautioning retailers and members of the public who accept cash for payment after they were called to “several recent incidents” involving the circulation of fake currency in the North Shore community, according to a press release issued early Thursday evening.
Some of the telltale signs, police said, were the bills being thick paper and not polymer, the translucent plastic being tape, hash marks appearing on the top right corner of the face-side or that corner being cut off and the maple leaf being not translucent and not a hologram.
The Bank of Canada website also has information on the legitimate bills’ security features.
