THUNDER BAY – Nishnawbe Aski Nation has selected former grand chief Alvin Fiddler as its new grand chief, replacing former grand chief Derek Fox, who was removed from the post following a meeting of chiefs-in-assembly in May.

Fiddler, of Muskrat Dam First Nation, will be acclaimed by resolution next month during this year’s Keewaywin Conference in Thunder Bay.

Fiddler has 25 years of leadership experience within Nishnawbe Aski Nation and was first elected grand chief in 2015 after serving several terms as deputy grand chief and working on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. He stepped down in 2021 to run for national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, but lost the election to RoseAnne Archibald.

Only one nomination was received for the position of grand chief for a candidate who met all requirements as per Section 4.1 of the NAN election procedures.

Information on the election process and NAN Election Procedures is available on the NAN Election website: www.nanelection.ca
