Marathon’s Wilson Memorial General Hospital reopens Obstetrical Program

The North of Superior Health Group, Wilson Memorial General Hospital branch, announces reopening of Obstetrical Program.

MARATHON: On Aug. 31, 2022, Wilson Memorial General Hospital, (WMG) reopened its Obstetrical Program.

The program is open 24/7 but due to the shortage of health care staff, the Obstetrical service is offered on an on-call basis.

Their nursing manager in the Obstetrics department at WMG, Jason, described the process as one involving the close partnership between the patient’s physician and the on-call Obstetrical nurse who is from the Marathon Health Team.

“We have a dedicated RN for Obstetrics from the Marathon Health Team, who has extensive obstetrics experience who is from Thunder Bay,” said Jason. “When there is an expected delivery, she is on call and comes in to help with the post-partum piece,” added Jason.

Essentially, Jason indicated that when there is a patient who comes to their hospital in labor, the WMG physician supervises and assists the patient with the “laboring” and then the RN Obstetrics nurse comes in to help with the post-partum stage of the delivery.

In spite of the shortage of staffing, this team effort is one which facilitates the safe delivery of the baby and ensures that the needed health care for both baby and mother is looked after.
