Marathon to hold barbecue to celebrate new mural

Many community members got the chance to participate and paint a little bit of the mural.

MARATHON – The Township of Marathon will be celebrating the completion of the new mural at the Marathon Recreation Complex on July 22.

“Barrick Hemlo is pleased to essentially sponsor a free barbeque to celebrate the completion of the community mural that we have in town in conjunction with Art We There Yet,” said Greg Vallance, acting mayor of Marathon.

The mural was designed by José Luis Vílchez and organized by Cora Rose, both of whom travelled to Marathon for the project.

“We had Jose and Cora from Art We There Yet to spend about the last four to six weeks in the community members to come out, throw some paint on the building and add some colour to the downtown core,” said Vallance.

Many community members got the chance to participate and paint a bit of the mural, and Vallance says that that participation raises community pride.

“It makes people feel like they’ve now had part of the legacy of the mural and every time that they drive downtown, they’ll remember their input and what they put into it,” he said.

The barbecue is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Marathon Recreation Complex on July 22 and is intended as a warm send-off for Jose and Cora.
