MANITOUWADGE — The Manitouwadge Fire Department is updating the bylaw that sets out its service levels.

Earlier this week, the Manitouwadge Fire Department submitted an updated version of the establishing and regulating bylaw.

Fire Chief Don Kruger said the original was passed in 1993, and upon request from the Ontario Fire Marshal, the updated bylaw attaches job descriptions for the different ranks within the fire department chain of command.

“This new [establishing and regulating] bylaw updates service levels we provide, using language taken directly from the latest regulation under the [Fire Protection and Prevention Act] for firefighter certification. It also outlines the job description of the chief and deputy fire chief, as well as, the captains and the firefighters themselves,” said Kruger.

However, the updated bylaw will exclude descriptions involving the fire department’s response to medical calls.

“I’m still waiting on paramedic services to get back to me with an agreement,” said Kruger during the council meeting on Wednesday.

The fire department will continue to respond to medical calls in the same fashion that is outlined in its policy.

"We will continue to do what we have always done and once the paramedic services deem us worthy of a response, we will update the bylaw accordingly,” Kruger said.
