MANITOUWADGE—The Manitouwadge Fire Department understands the excitement that comes with summer activities such as spending the day on the boat, house boat, kayak or canoe. In an effort to help keep everyone safe when taking part in these activities, they posted some helpful hints.

On the top of their list was the message to all boaters. They want everyone, "To ensure that their life jacket or Personal Floating Device fit you, and to check this often to ensure that all fasteners and straps are in good working order." This message supports the statement that “Always wear your life jacket, simply having in the water craft with you is not enough.”

Other important tips include they shared with the community and region included:

  • Remember alcohol and these recreation activities don’t mix.
  • If you’re out on the house boat for the day ensure to have a working Carbon Monoxide/smoke alarm onboard.
  • Know the water body you are on, and let someone know where you’re going even if you are not going alone.
  • Ensure you have all required safety items for your type of water craft, for example lights, bail bucket, whistle.
  • Keep your engine tuned up, a poorly running engine can produce Carbon Monoxide

The Manitouwadge Fire Department knows how much fun planning a day on your favourite water craft can be. But to ensure water safety for everyone engaging in these activities, they ask you to follow the helpful tips that they offer.
