Hymers Fall Fair continues to be a success

Hymers Fall Fair will be up and running again on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

THUNDER BAY – Hymers Fall Fair started up again on Sunday for its 112th year.

Erin Laforest, president of the Hymers Agricultural Society, said Hymers Fall Fair is special with so many things to see and do.

“We have horse shows going on at the horse ring for today and tomorrow. We also have our market building with plenty of vendors selling their home goods and home wares.

“We have multiple food vendors. Other than that, we've got the train rides for the kids. We've got kids activities up at the at the children's area and, a lot of great fun for everybody.”

Laforest said they had great entertainment at the hill top stage as well as the main stage. "Plenty of entertainment for people to enjoy."

The stages are full for the weekend, Laforest said.

“We had the Pipes and Drums of Thunder Bay already come through. We've got a few more coming on this afternoon and full line up tomorrow.”

Laforest was pleased to see big crowds at the fair.

“Usually if one day is not as busy, it's busier the next. It looks like it's going to be great weather for the entire weekend.”

It is estimated that around 8,000 come to the fairgrounds per year, Laforest said.

“It really warms my heart to see everybody come together to support the fair, to just attend the fair, the volunteers, I couldn't ask for better team work with my volunteers.

“Everybody really steps up to the plate and works together. We are a true blue down to earth agricultural fair. We don't have the rides, the beer gardens, all that.

"We have agriculture. We have animals, we have people selling their vegetables, their pies and baked goods.”

Hymers Fall Fair has about 150 to 200 volunteers per year.

Laforest said they had a bad storm Saturday night however, their great team pulled it all together for Sunday.

“You wouldn't even know what happened here last night. It was really, really tremendous what they did.

“Some of our buildings take up quite a bit of volunteers like our exhibit hall. I really encourage people to put in an application, go online and get your name in there to volunteer for next year because it's a great fair to be a part of.”

Laforest said it takes a year of planning to put the fair on.

“It's a board of directors that we have, anywhere between 10 and 20 people. And, we put things together throughout the year, but really everything kind of comes down to the wire in the last month and gets put together. It always falls together, no matter what happens behind the scenes, it's always a good turnout."

Hymers Fall Fair will be up and running again on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
