MARATHON—With the help of their teacher, Mrs. Wilson, integrated the importance of “Black History Month’s” theme in their Grade 4 and 5 curriculum.

The theme of “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” became the back drop for learning for these students, while at the same time focusing on recognizing the daily contributions that Black Canadians make to Canada.

Their teacher Mrs. Wilson, chose to guide her students through a learning process that focused on the life and importance of Harriet Tubman, who was an American abolitionist and political activist, fighting for the rights of enslaved people.

The class was guided through video presentations about Harriet Tubman, not only getting visuals of her important work, but also learning about the challenges she herself faced, and the contributions she made to help others.

Every February, people across Canada participate in Black History Month and festivities to honour the legacy of Black Canadians and their communities.
