Highway 17 alignment to close a segment of Casque Isles Trail

A portion of the Schreiber Channel Segment of the Casque Isles Trail will be closed until Dec. 31, due to drilling to facilitate Highway 17 realignment project.

SCHREIBER—The Casque Isles Hiking Club informed trail users and Schreiber residents of a temporary trail closure on the west end of the Schreiber Channel Segment, near Rainbow Falls Provincial Park. This closure will take place until Dec. 31, 2022.

Their announcement identified the specific area affected by this project, as the portion of the Schreiber Channel Segment from km. 14.1 (Rainbow Falls Gate) to km 15.2 (east of the old MTO pit). The purpose of this closure is for clearing and drilling to facilitate planning for the Highway 17 realignment through the area.

As a result, the Club wants resident to be aware that barricades will be in place for the duration of this closure, and no access other to the workers who will be working on this project will be allowed in the area.

“To facilitate the proposed realignment of Highway 17 through the area, preliminary clearing of the route will take place followed by geotechnical drilling, until Dec. 31,” said the Club.

The club’s announcement also indicated that this area will be considered a construction zone and that walkers and hikers will be prohibited from using this portion of the trail during the duration of the closure. “The work to be done is considered a construction zone and passage to hikers and walkers through the area is deemed too hazardous,” stated the Club.
