THUNDER BAY — "I wish Justin and his family the best as they begin this next chapter," said Minster of Indigenous Services Patty Hadju in response to the announcement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that he is stepping down as leader of the Liberal party.

At a news conference Monday, Trudeau said the Governor General has agreed to prorogue parliament until March 24. He said he will stay on as Prime Minister while the Liberals elect a new leader.

"In 2015, when I ran to be the Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay-Superior North, I embarked on a journey that far exceeded my expectations. Through four cabinet appointments, I have had the extraordinary opportunity to serve my community and country," said Hajdu in a written statement to Newswatch. "I am grateful to Prime Minister Trudeau for seeing my passion for equity and putting it to good use for Canadians.

"My most important role is to serve – as MP for Thunder Bay – Superior North and as a Minister. I will continue to work for my riding and Canada with all my heart."

A spokesperson for Hajdu has confirmed that she will run again in the upcoming federal election.
