GINOOGAMING — The former chief of Ginoogaming First Nation passed away over the weekend.

Leslie O’Nabigon passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Jan. 18 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay at the age of 65 years, according to a media release issued by the First Nation on Tuesday.

In the release, O'Nabigon is described as a community leader who "made his contribution to the betterment of Indigenous Peoples.” He's also described as someone who loved camping, fishing, reading and spending time with family.

Current chief Sheri Taylor, expressed condolences to the family, friends and community on behalf of the First Nation's council.

“We appreciated Leslie’s advice on legal files in regards to the protection of our homelands as the new Chief and Council. Having support from a previous Chief meant a lot to us,” said Taylor.

Throughout his career O'Nabigon held several positions, including chief of his community. He also provided leadership in other organizations advocating for First Nations, including Matawa First Nations Management and the Nishnawbe-Aski Development Fund.

A funeral will be held in Thunder Bay on Jan. 24.
