Fort Albany resident killed in crash on winter road

FORT ALBANY — A Fort Albany resident was killed in a crash on the winter road over the weekend. 

The single-vehicle crash involving a motorized snow vehicle happened on Sunday. James Bay OPP says officers from its Moosonee detachment received the call just after 9 p.m. A 51-year-old person from Fort Albany was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision was on the James Bay winter road, which connects Fort Albany and Moosonee during the winter months. It has not opened for the 2023-24 season yet, according to the website of Kimesskanemenow Limited Partnership, which maintains the road.

The investigation is ongoing. 

It includes the OPP's traffic incident management enforcement (TIME) team and the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario - Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. 

Police say they're share further information when it's available.
