Drone operators are pilots, OPP say

Canadian drone operators must abide by federal aviation regulations and be aware of municipal and provincial trespassing laws that may apply.

Flying a drone might be a fun way to spend a sunny afternoon in a vacant field outside city limits, but rules still apply, provincial police cautioned this week.

"Drones are aircraft, which makes (an operator) a pilot," an OPP news release said. "When you fly your drone, you're sharing the skies with other drones and aircraft."

If a drone weighs less than 250 grams, the device doesn't need to be registered and its operator doesn't have to obtain a drone operator licence.

Still, Canadian drone operators must abide by federal aviation regulations and be aware of municipal and provincial trespassing laws that may apply, the release said.

Recreational fliers who flout the regulations can face a $1,000 fine, police noted.
