NIPIGON – A Thunder Bay man has been charged with impaired driving after crashing into a ditch along Highway 11-17.

Police were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision west of Highway 585 at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 1, an Ontario Provincial Police news release said.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and went into the ditch, causing damage to hydro poles and trees before stopping, according to police.

The release said the driver attempted to flee the scene but officers “took physical control” of him.

Through the investigation, it was determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol.

A 19-year-old Thunder Bay resident was charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired and driving with a blood-alcohol concentration above 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon.
