THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay District Health Unit staff across the region represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees have a new contract.

CUPE Local 1759, which represents 72 full-time and five part-time workers, reached a deal after members previously voted in favour of a strike mandate.

If workers had walked out, health unit offices across northwestern Ontario would have been affected in communities including Nipigon, Red Rock, Marathon, Manitouwadge, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Geraldton, Longlac, Nakina, Caramat, Armstrong, and Upsala.

A previous release from CUPE indicated what the union workers were looking for in a new collective agreement.

"These dedicated workers, who are instrumental in protecting the district, are advocating for fair working conditions and improvements that will ensure the continued safety and well-being of the community."

The offices employ workers in various roles, including registered practical nurses, dental educators, custodial staff, social workers and youth engagement facilitators.
