THUNDER BAY — A man who violated a court order that prohibited him from fishing in Ontario has received a substantial fine, and now faces additional restrictions related to fishing.

According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, Robert Whalen of Sioux Lookout pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a court order, and has been suspended from any method of fishing until September 2027.

He is prohibited from being in possession of any fishing-related equipment within 30 metres of any Ontario waters, and from having any association with anyone engaged in any method of fishing for a period of two years.

The man received a $6,600 fine, and is required to see a probation officer.

The case dates back to April 2024, when conservation officers observed Whalen actively angling on the Jackpine River east of Nipigon, in contravention of a previous court order.

A Justice of the Peace in Thunder Bay presided over the trial.
