Construction to begin on Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation's new elementary school next year.

PIC RIVER, ON -- The construction on a new elementary school in Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation will begin by spring of next year.

The new school is expected to have a floor area of 29,924 square feet and will be able to accommodate a student population of 175.

It is believed that the construction of this new school will relieve the overcrowding issue at the existing school and eliminate the need for portables.

Biigtigong Nishnaabeg indicated that “the modern teaching facility will be used as a launchpad for Biigtigong youth to begin their pursuit of their dreams, while also acting as a conduit where precious cultural heritage can be imparted to the next generation.”

Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation chief Duncan Michano is happy the children are getting a safe and accessible facility they deserve.

"Very excited, as much as an old guy can get excited," Michano said. "I am excited for the kids, to tell you the truth, because they waited a long time for this."

The facility is expected to be constructed with a high-efficiency building envelope, HVAC systems, and will include modern technology and teaching environments which have been tailored to fit the First Nation’s educational needs.

Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation director of operations Debi Bouchie said this facility will allow the students to succeed.

"Every child deserves this level of facility to help them prosper and do great things in their education," Bouchie said.

"I think this is something that's going to be great for the kids. I'm excited for them."

Their announcement included that the school will include the following features:

  • Eight large classrooms
  • Classroom and support offices for special education delivery
  • Library
  • Cafeteria and kitchen
  • Large traditional learning classroom
  • Community gym with volleyball, basketball, and badminton courts
  • Stage for performing arts
  • Administration and staff area
  • Multiple large storage areas

The new school is described to also include extensive site development including a bus drop off loop, softball field, asphalt basketball court, playground, walking trails, outdoor classrooms and storage garage.

The school will also include its own below-ground water reservoir and fire pump system for sprinkler protection.

The Government of Canada has committed an investment of $23.8 million to support the building of this new school, and is working in close partnership with Biitigong leadership to ensure the successful completion of this project.

Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2023.
