Class eyes sweet returns in Persian fundraiser

Keeping up with a Schreiber and Terrace Bay tradition, Jami-Lee Fiorito's Grade 7/8 class is holding a Persian fundraiser - with time running out for those looking to get a deal on some delicious Persians.

SCHREIBER — How many Persians does it take to send a Grade 7/8 class on their last field trip of the year?

That’s the question Jami-Lee Fiorito and her class at Schreiber Public School will answer when their ongoing Persian fundraiser reaches its conclusion later this week.

In a statement to Dougall Media, Schreiber Public School principal Amy Buchan said students in Fiorito’s class have been “working diligently” toward their graduation trip to Winnipeg.

It all began with Fiorito herself, who reached out to a classic Thunder Bay haunt to provide Persians for the fundraiser.

“Ms. Fiorito had the idea and contacted the Persian Man in Thunder Bay to arrange for this fundraiser and make it possible. This Persian fundraiser is a ‘special event day’ as per the ministry requirements around nutrition and the funds from this fundraiser will be used to support the accommodations and transportation of students following the board policy for fundraising,” Buchan said.

Buchan highlighted how successful their efforts have been so far.

“The response of the Persian fundraisers has definitely been a positive one. They are a well-loved Schreiber/Terrace Bay tradition. Community members always seem to be excited to enjoy the Thunder Bay delicacy and are supportive to school fundraising efforts – which we appreciate greatly,” she said.

Buchan noted that despite being a small school of about 50 students, Schreiber P.S. offers a wide range of programming for students and families - including breakfast and snack programs, daily lunch time activities like games, arts and crafts, and an after-school program held twice a week that is aimed at fostering collaboration, enhanced well-being, and a strong sense of community.

And the fundraising doesn’t stop at Persians.

Buchan mentioned that Schreiber’s school council still has tickets available for a handmade quilt that will be raffled off in February – with funds raised from the raffle also contributing to the Grade 7/8 graduation trip.

For more information about the quilt raffle, please contact Schreiber P.S. at (807) 824-2082.

Order forms for the Persians were sent home with students last week – although those who might have missed the form or who live in Schreiber and have a hankering for Persians can also order them online here.

The cost is $20 for a box of 12 Persians.

The deadline to order is Thursday, Feb. 1 and Persians can be picked up from Schreiber P.S. on Wednesday, Feb. 7.
