OPP have laid charges in a historical sexual assault case.

NAMAYGOOSISAGAGUN — Ontario Provincial Police have charged a Thunder Bay man in connection with a sexual assault case they say goes back decades.

On Thursday, police announced that a 61 year-old man faces the charges of gross indecency, indecent assault on a female, sexual assault and sexual assault causing bodily harm stemming from multiple incidents over a decade-long period.

Police said the alleged assaults took place between 1978 and 1988 in Namaygoosisagagun First Nation. Also known as Collins First Nation, the community is about 30 kilometres west of Armstrong, and accessible only by train, across lakes and portage trails by boat and in the winter by snow machine.

Some of the charges – gross indecency and indecent assault on a female – follow the law that were in force at the time of the alleged incidents.

Police encourage anyone who believes they were a victim under similar circumstances to contact the Thunder Bay OPP detachment. Those wishing to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers.

It is Newswatch policy not to name people facing criminal accusations when we are unlikely to follow the case to its conclusion in the courts.
