ATTAWAPISKAT — Nishnawbe Aski police have arrested and charged a 67-year-old man with a number of offences related to alleged historical sex crimes in Attawapiskat First Nation and Moosonee.

In a media release issued Friday afternoon, police said the charges are the result of an investigation into alleged assaults from 1971 to 1994, and involving three victims ranging in age from four to 17-years-old at the time of the alleged incidents. The investigation started in November 2024, police said.

The 67-year-old Attawapiskat man was charged with three counts each of indecent assault and gross indecency, two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual exploitation.

The indecent assault and gross indecency charges reflect the language in the criminal code at the time of the alleged incidents.

The accused appeared in court on Wednesday and was released with conditions and a future court date.

The police service said it is still investigating and believes there may be more victims.

People who believe they may be a victim or have information are being encouraged to contact investigators at (705) 272-5600 ext. 103, or email [email protected] or [email protected].

It is Newswatch policy not to name people facing criminal accusations when we are unlikely to follow the case to its conclusion in the courts.
