GERALDTON – Technology helped the OPP nab suspected illegal tobacco.
Ontario Provincial Police say an automated licence plate recognition alert gave officers the heads up about an expired licence plate.
The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Jan. 14 along Highway 11 in Geraldton. During the ensuing traffic stop, police observed several cases of tobacco products. Police determined the driver, a 46-year-old Thunder Bay man, was over the legal limit and had no permit for tobacco.
Officers seized 13 cases of chewing tobacco.
The accused was charged, under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with possession of un-taxed cigars and other tobacco and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
