MARATHON — An extreme cold warning remains in effect for communities along the north shore and across the region.
Environment Canada restated the warning on Tuesday morning, as temperatures dipped to -37.5 C in the Marathon area.
Wind chill values will make it feel like -40 C to -45 C, which puts the general public at risk if they remain outside for too long.
To make matters worse, a snow-squall watch is also in place along the north shore.
Heavy lake-effect snow, with accumulations anywhere from 15 to 45 centimetres, could fall on the Marathon and Schreiber areas.
The band of weather could impact the area through Wednesday, making travel through the region hazardous at times due to sudden changes.
The extreme cold warning also remains in effect in Thunder Bay.
Temperatures are expected to gradually warm up throughout Northwestern Ontario as the weekend approaches.
