GREENSTONE — Efforts to repair the runway lighting system at the Renald Y Beaulieu Greenstone Regional Airport remain ongoing after a lightning strike at the start of the month.

Greenstone municipal officials provided an update Friday, stating that damage to the system is more extensive than anticipated and is still being assessed.

The update said the lightning strike happened either late Aug. 1 or early Aug. 2, which affected a regulator that controlled the power for the airport's runway lighting system.

Municipal officials said a new regulator would require at least 10 weeks to ship, but a used one was located in southern Ontario. The unit arrived on Wednesday, but upon installation and activation it was determined that there was additional damage.

Portable lighting options are being used while the situation continues to be addressed, municipal officials added.

The update said the Nakina airport remains available for Medevac flights at night, as well as other methods of emergency transportation.
