VIDEO: Passing manoeuvre causes a close call on Hwy. 11

NIPIGON — On the same day that OPP were investigating two serious collisions involving transport trucks on Highway 11, two tractor-trailers came dangerously close to a potentially disastrous accident.

According to a post on the Skilled Truckers Canada Facebook page, the incident happened Monday in the Nipigon area at about 2:20 pm.

Dash-cam video shows one transport truck had moved into the opposite lane to overtake another.

But just as it came alongside, the driver of the second truck chose to move into the oncoming lane at the same time in order to overtake a tractor-trailer that was ahead of it.

A quick response by the operator of the first vehicle enabled it to turn onto the shoulder of the highway to narrowly avoid a collision.

OPP Cst. Matt Foster said "Driving behaviour such as what is seen in the video is unacceptable. The OPP encourages members of the public to contact police if you observe dangerous driving behaviour. Please give commercial motor vehicles lots of space on the road, and if you are going to pass, please only pass if it is safe to do so."

Foster added that it's important to take weather conditions into account, as "Even if there are no other oncoming vehicles...it still may be considered too dangerous to pass."

There's no confirmation yet whether Monday's incident was reported to OPP, but Foster told Dougall Media police did receive a complaint about unsafe driving involving a transport truck on Highway 11 Monday afternoon, and that a trucker was charged with careless driving as a result.

Two people were injured in the earlier incidents on Highway 11.
