Students build picnic tables (4 photos)

LONGLAC – An experiential learning project in a Longlac classroom is providing students with opportunities to acquire knowledge and understanding of the construction sector.

The Grade 7 and 8 students at Our Lady of Fatima constructed and built wooden benches for the schoolyard after the classroom teacher, Ms. Savage, submitted an experiential learning proposal to get funding to provide education of the construction sector as a skilled trade.

Math lead Karly Baker supported the construction phase of the project to connect mathematical concepts to the construction trade.

Students learned the importance of measuring accurately, estimating and imperial to metric conversions while following instructions and applying problem-solving skills when the building did not work out as planned.

This project gave students the opportunity to learn how to use tools safely.

Students now get to take great pleasure in observing their hardwork and dedication as students, community members and staff appreciate the beautiful benches to sit and enjoy the schoolyard scenery.

The goal of this project was to provide the students with the opportunity to take part in a hands-on learning experience.
