SCHREIBER - In a surprising turn of events, just after 8 p.m. on Thursday Schreiber Mayor Kevin Mullins declared a state of emergency regarding the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This news comes after the township announced its splash pad reopened after a temporary closure due to a water restriction put in place earlier this month.

On its municipal website, the township wrote in a release that “a structural failure which allowed water to enter the digester” is preventing proper wastewater treatment.

According to the release, the wastewater plant operates with two clarifiers. Clarifier one experienced the failure while clarifier two was operational but subsequently suffered a mechanical failure of the rake system.

A contractor is onsite pumping out clarifier two and an estimated completion today.

Once the clarifier is drained and cleaned completely, the contractor can begin the repairs.

“This in no way affects our residents or businesses in their daily use of water or our sewer system,” the township said.

“We will update the public as repairs are made. This is a precautionary measure and will have no impact on the ratepayer.”
