THUNDER BAY — A passenger on a Porter Airlines flight to Thunder Bay may be out-of-pocket for disobeying the ban on smoking on airplanes.
The airline said the incident happened on a June 6 flight from Toronto to Thunder Bay.
A Porter spokesperson said in a statement that a crew member found a cigarette in the lavatory of the aircraft after noticing the smell of smoke.
A passenger was identified as the suspected culprit, and the crew informed security personnel upon arrival in Thunder Bay.
The airline said the plane landed without further incident, and that there was no risk to aircraft, crew or passengers.
It said all passengers were held aboard the aircraft until security arrived at the gate, but security personnel did not board the plane.
Under federal law, smoking or vaping on an aircraft can result in a fine of up to $5,000.
A conviction may also lead to the individual having a criminal record.
