THUNDER BAY – As this year’s outdoor pool season comes to a close, lifeguards and children alike are wishing for more time.

With fall quickly approaching, the city will begin closing outdoor pools, beaches and splash pads.

Mikayla Durant, head guard at Heath Pool, called it a very successful summer.

“Lots of kids were coming out, lots of regulars and it seems like they were really enjoying their swims, which is amazing.”

Durant said on hot days they saw around 200 swimmers each day.

“We're sad the summer is over because the kids enjoyed it so much and it was really great for everybody.

“It's very much like a community. We all get to know the kid’s names, they're regulars. We're excited for next summer."

Dawson Haack, guard/instructor at Heath Pool, said the number of swimmers they see varies depending on the weather.

“On a super hot and sunny day, I'd say we've had up to probably 50 or 60 kids in the pool (at one time).

“It's really just a great opportunity for them to get out of the sun and cool off a little bit from the heat of the day,” he said.

Noah, a child swimming at Heath Pool, said he swims there often.

He said the pool was a great spot to meet new friends and hangout.

When asked about the closure of the pool, Noah said “it's upsetting because I don't get to swim as often.”

Two young swimmers were enjoying the final few days at Heath Pool. The last day for swimming is Sunday.

They said they attended the pool many times throughout the summer and their favourite part is the slide.

Both going into Grade 4, said they are excited to be with friends and meet new people.
