NAPS arrests four young people after Fort Hope school fire

FORT HOPE – Police have arrested two more young people after a school burned down in Fort Hope last week.

In addition to the 14-year-old male and 17-year-old male arrested last Thursday, officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service have also arrested a 13-year-old female and a 13-year-old male.

All of the young people have been charged with arson, mischief, and possession of incendiary material after the Jan. 25 school fire in Fort Hope, also known as Eabametoong First Nation.

NAPS also charged the 17-year-old with possession of break-in instruments and assaulting a police officer.

At 7:10 a.m., officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service received a call for service about a structural fire in the community.

When officers arrived at the fire, they found the school was engulfed in flames.

Community firefighters extinguished the fire, but the structure was lost.

According to NAPS, they determined the fire was caused by arson.

As a result of continued investigation, four suspects were identified, located and taken into custody.

The youths have been remanded into custody with a future court appearance on Jan. 30.

The investigation of the fire remains ongoing.
