MARATHON – Two sailors from Wisconsin almost lost their sailboat to Lake Superior after the boat broke free from its anchor on Wednesday.

The sailors noticed their boat drifting as they were coming to shore to get relief from the strong winds hitting their boat, provincial police said in a Thursday news release.

On-duty officers with the Ontario Provincial Police noticed the two in a dingy struggling to get back to the sailboat as if drifted back into open water.

As they approached the scene, the officers noticed an off-duty officer attempting to help the sailors.

Together the officers help the sailors regain control of their sailboat and the officers guided them to a safe location for the night.
