TERRACE BAY – The Terrace Bay rest stop is being constructed in two phases through separate contracts.

According to MTO, the first contract was awarded earlier this summer to Pioneer Construction Inc and is for the parking lot and groundwork construction.

The parking lot and groundwork construction includes, but is not limited to, grubbing, grading and paving, concrete sidewalks and curbs, a drainage and stormwater management pond and lighting and parking lot embedded electrical works.

Construction is underway and will be completed next year while the second contract is for the rest area building which is currently in the design phase, MTO said.

“We had a meeting with the MTO in the spring and we were told then that the lot will be ready for trucks to park there. Over the winter, there's going to be gravel put down and some portable washrooms there,” Terrace Bay Mayor Paul Malashewski said.

“We just received word yesterday that there won't be anything done with it until 2025 now.”

Malashewski said it is going to have to be another year of waiting.

“This is probably four years we've been waiting for this to happen. Very disappointed that this hasn't happened yet, but hopefully they can get things going next year.
